Does the European Accessibility Act Apply to Your Website?

Who it covers

It applies to consumer-facing services sold in the EU, including e-commerce, banking, telecoms, transport, audiovisual media. The key is where you sell, not where you’re based. So, if you provide services to EU consumers, the EAA may apply to you.

Which standard applies

The Act uses EN 301 549 as the standard to measure accessibility. It incorporates WCAG 2.1 Level A and AA in full. This check tests WCAG 2.2; a stricter version that covers all of it.

Since when

28 June 2025. By then, every Member State had to have this written into national law. This means the EAA is already in force, not something that’s still on its way.

Who enforces it

Each Member State has its own authority, so the route to compliance, sanctions and how strictly the rules get monitored can vary by country.

What does the free EAA website check cover?

The free EAA website check tests your homepage against WCAG 2.2 Level AA and lists every issue it finds, ranked by severity, with guidance on what to do about each one. WCAG 2.2 covers WCAG 2.1 in full, so compliance with it includes the success criteria referenced by EN 301 549. Your report lands by email. No account and no card needed

What you do next depends on which result you got:

Compliant. Congratulations! That's rare on a first scan. Run a full scan to check your whole site, then turn on continuous monitoring to catch future changes. Our advanced tools can also check colour contrast, tabbing order and content.

Partially compliant. You've got a mix of good and bad. Work through the flagged issues using our Content and Media tools, then run the check again to confirm they're fixed. Once the check comes back compliant, you're ready for a full website scan.

  • The Act itself names no version. EN 301 549, the EU's accessibility standard, incorporates WCAG 2.1 Level A and AA in full. This check tests WCAG 2.2 Level AA, and the W3C confirms that anything conforming to 2.2 also conforms to 2.1 and 2.0. Note: WCAG 2.2 dropped success criterion 4.1.1 Parsing, so if you need to report against 2.1 specifically, you'll still have to test that one separately.
